about maya bolsens

Since I was young I've always felt a strong connection with clay. You could often find me in clay pits salvaging shark teeth. Now, my hands are still in clay, working as a ceramic artist based in Antwerp. With a background in fashion styling and a training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, I’ve developed a personal sense of form, colour and composition which I now translate into clay. My work balances between sculpture and functional art and I like to explore and get inspired by themes like duality, transformation, personal moments and the relationship between human intervention and the organic forces of nature. By embracing raw textures, contrasts, and intuitive forms I create pieces that feel both archaic and contemporary. Each work is a unique composition shaped by instinct and materiality. For me, ceramics are not a conclusion but a conversation between hand and earth, between maker and viewer. The black and white checkered pattern I often use in my ceramic sculptures reflects a tension between opposites: light and dark, movement and stillness. It gestures toward dualism  but resists taking sides. In a polarized world of fixed opinions, the grid becomes a quiet manifesto…a space where contrasts can coexist without collapsing into conflict. My work grows in many directions at once. The larger sculptures and the smaller objects are not opposites but relatives, siblings, studies, echoes.I separate my Art page from my Shop for clarity, not hierarchy: the small pieces I offer at mayabolsens.com often begin as seeds for future sculptures, or as distilled versions of them. Together, they form one ecosystem.  Some pieces slip easily into one category, others hover between two. That overlap is the point. My practice moves in cycles rather than chapters, and these groupings are simply markers to guide you through the landscape as it keeps reshaping itself.
